Four Topic Finders

When working on a speech or research paper, sometimes coming up with a good, interesting, and substantial topic is the hardest part! Here are four librarian-recommended resources that you can use to find a subject for your assignments.

CIAO Focus Archive
Each month, the staff for CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online compile their reports and papers on important international issues as well as select sources outside CIAO (e.g. Council on Foreign Relations). For example, the December 2008 focus is on What the World Expects from President Obama.

CQ Researcher: Browse by Topic
CQ Researcher is a database of reports that provide overviews on specific topics. Reading these briefing papers can be a way to gain basic understanding of a topic before pursuing more thorough and in-depth sources.

Discovery Guides (CSA/ProQuest)
Topic briefings that provide basic info and recent insights on each subject. Each Discovery Guide links to an article database to help you find pertinent and credible resources. Discovery Guides are also grouped by discipline: Arts & Humanities | Natural Sciences | Social Sciences | Technology

U.S. GAO Reports & Testimonies
Browse for reports and testimonies from the US Government Accountability Office by topic and narrow by date if desired. Topics with new reports/testimonies are also available on the US GAO's Topic Collections page.
